Macaria camping site is located at Capilungo, in the municipality of Alliste, in the Salentini hills and 800 metres from the sea .
The tents are sited and mounted under big centenarian olive trees and the area is surrounded by low walls and by an old barn type construction called a "caseddhu".
The whole area has an authentic rural atmosphere highlighted by the red earth scattered with stones and by a vegetation which includes almond, myrtles, and lentil shrubs trees and lots of caper bushes here and there. In every corner and nook you can imagine how hard it has been over the centuries for the farmers to cultivate this magic land.
We organise nice slow walks so you can take in the pace of life here, the colours and the scents of this strip of land at the bottom of Italy. For longer escursions the best method of travel is by bicycle riding down the narrow paths of the countryside in and out of the olive trees.
Together with these sport activities you can prepare good genuine food from the local produce reflecting the traditions and culture of this land in our refreshment tent.
The land around Macaria, which goes from Gallipoli to S Maria di Leuca, is characterised by the Salentini hills where the sea and the traditional rural countryside meet together and live in harmony
The coast is rocky between Mancaversa and Ugento. But walking along the coast due south towards S. Maria di Leuca you find sandy beaches almost Carrabbean like. The beach at Marina di Pescoluse is known as the Maldive! Turing inland you will find old historic villages and towns such as Felline and Ugento, peaceful and sunny during the day and lively in the evening during the numerous village festivals in the summer. Not far from the camping site is the Regional Park of Punta Pizzo and the coast-line of Ugento. These are protected areas where you will find flora and fauna typical of this part of coast which is made up of dunes and marshes.
But the Salento is not just sea and nature. Its towns have fine art centres. Gallipoli, with its historical centre, built on an Island is enclosed by Spanish walls. Lecce is the city by excellence for barocco architecture and has lots interesting cultural references beyond those of the Salentini territory.
